CONTENTS
What are the " ingredients " of a sculpture in the 19th century ? Plaster, bronze, marble ? Not only that in Auguste Bartholdi's day, the making of a statue involved many stages and as many materials, techniques and actors. Far from the romantic myth of the artist creating alone in his studio, the practice of sculpture is by nature collective, especially when it's monumental. While the sculptor can produce a sketch on paper or in clay on his own, he still has to attract and satisfy clients, sometimes even modifying his project. He also needs several technicians to transpose the model into another material and multiply its dimensions or editions.
.
The studio collection preserved by the Musée Bartholdi, along with new acquisitions, illustrate these stages and the diversity of mediums involved in creating a work.
