Content
The exhibition "Faut-il brûler les musées", the fruit of a joint project by the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Musée Lorrain, offers a critical and contextualized rereading of Nancy's collections, with the aim of contributing to a reflection on the writing of history. Under a deliberately provocative title, borrowed - and misappropriated - from a survey published in the avant-garde magazine L'Esprit Nouveau in 1921, "Faut-il brûler le Louvre?" (Should the Louvre be burnt?), this exhibition recalls the rich and crucial debate that arose from the very birth of museums, on the very role and legitimacy of these institutions with a so-called universal vocation. It aims to shed light on the history of Nancy's collections to reveal another function of the museum: that of a conservatory of various forms of domination, whose memory is preserved in the objects.
