Far from being an isolated case, traditional Alsatian architecture is part of a long history of wooden architecture. From the rudimentary construction of the first prehistoric huts, to the richly ornamented houses of the Renaissance, this tradition has never ceased to evolve. However, the emergence of new materials
materials such as brick, breeze-block, steel and concrete are gradually reducing its role in construction.
And yet, until the 19th century, architectural treatises extolled the virtues of wood, placing it at the heart of architects' choices for its many qualities.
Available in abundance and easy to work with, wood and earth are omnipresent in construction, from foundations to frameworks. In the Alsatian countryside, timber-framed houses remained the norm until the mid-19th century.
