Born in Paris in 1928 and passing away in 2023, photographer Elliott Erwitt has immortalised himself in the collective visual memory through his iconic black-and-white photographs. Quirky snapshots of dogs and emblematic architectural shots are constant themes in Erwitt’s work. Perhaps less well-known is the fact that the photographer was stationed in Karlsruhe in 1951 as part of his military service for the U.S. Army. During this time, in addition to commissioned work for the military, he also took photographs as a freelance photographer, offering a private glimpse into a bygone Karlsruhe. These few, almost unknown Karlsruhe photographs are the reason why the SGK is presenting over 180 vintage Elliott Erwitt works from the 1950s to the 1980s. New to this exhibition is the Kid’s Zone! Children can experience and discover art from their perspective. At the entrance, the friendly stuffed dog “Elli” is already waiting to accompany the young visitors through the rooms.
