The Fondation Fernet-Branca invites you to discover an exhibition devoted to the work of Jean Messagier, one of the most singular and influential painters of his generation, with a unique, deeply personal and intimate pictorial universe. His work is one of the most important in the history of modern art and abstract painting in the second half of the 20th century. This exhibition, featuring over one hundred and seventy works, traces his career back in time: from his last works, which seem to give precedence to form, crystallizing in sumptuous completions the opera of his life as a painter, his history, his stories, to his early works, where the characteristics that we have come to retain of his art, brought to the absolute abstraction he sought at the end of the 60s, are set in place. We have deliberately only alluded to the surprising works of the 70s and 80s, which have been the subject of recent presentations.
