The artist, who was born in Ravensburg in 1958 and now lives in Berlin after working in London, Paris and New York, is one of the great innovators and influential representatives of woodcuts in contemporary art. With his prints from several blocks, ever new printing states and overlays, he opened up completely new possibilities for the genre. His woodcuts, almost always developed into series, are monumental, sensual, rich in technology and content, and complex. This makes Matthias Mansen's woodcuts unique in contemporary art. They found and still find their way into important collections, museums and galleries in Germany and the USA.

The focus of the exhibition at the Singen Art Museum is Matthias Mansen's current series "Trieste or the Gods", which was created following a summer trip from 2017. This series is embedded in a retrospective retrospective that shows Mansen's development from 1983 to the present day.

The exhibition was developed in collaboration with the artist and the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation, Gottorf Castle. The catalog for the exhibition was made possible thanks to the generous support of Ms. Bettina Horn.
