Whether at the front or at rest, a multitude of objects accompany soldiers in their daily lives: statutory, personal, industrial or handcrafted. Some are commonplace, others more intimate, and all have a symbolic dimension. Small or large, remarkable or ordinary, these objects are today material traces preserved by the Verdun Memorial to convey what life was like for these men engaged in battle.
This exhibition brings together the artistic point of view of comic strip artist Marko (Les Godillots) and the historical perspective of the Memorial team. Bringing to light and telling the story of ten of these everyday objects used by soldiers is both a way of giving them new life and a way of paying tribute to them. Halfway between fiction and reality, these never-before-seen illustrations by the Godillots cartoonist provide an opportunity to (re)discover the use of the objects on display in the permanent exhibition at the Verdun Memorial.
Access to the exhibition is included in the Memorial admission ticket.
