In 1899, the Grand Duke of Baden appointed the painter and graphic artist Hans Thoma as director of the Grand Ducal Art Gallery in Karlsruhe. Thoma had attended the art school there at a young age before making a name for himself as an artist in Frankfurt am Main after various stages of further training in Germany and abroad. The studio exhibition explores the questions of which acquisitions Thoma made during his tenure in Karlsruhe, what understanding of art guided him and how independently he was able to make decisions at the Kunsthalle. It shows a selection of representative acquisitions, including important works from the collection from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including works by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, Anselm Feuerbach, Wilhelm Leibl and Wilhelm Trübner. The exhibition tour focuses on Thomas' own artistic work.
