Streets are one of the most important means of transportation for humanity and history and yet, for a long time, were not regarded as being of interest for museums. The existing documents of shipping, airlines and railway museums show particular and more recent means of transport. What about the more than 40 museums about cars? They simply assume that streets exist. One could say that that much ignorance of the connection between streets and cars, traffic and the construction of motorways can only be met by opening a museum that focuses on streets themselves.
The German Museum of Streets (Deutsches Straßenmuseum) was opened in 1990 in the armoury of the former Castle Germersheim. It shows the constantly extended exhibition about streets in different times, from early caravan roads to the high-tech motorways of our times.
