Right in the heart of the former city centre of Gray is the historic castle dating back to the 18th century which is now home to the interesting collection of the Museum of Baron Martin. The vast salons on the ground floor from the 18th and 19th centuries are adorned with decorative art objects and therefore offer a historical and personal framework for painted and sculptured masterpieces from late medieval times to the early 20th century.
Highlights are works by Van Kessel, Van Loo Avercamp, Boucher, Tissot. The major gallery on the first floor with its high ogee moulding and high ceiling lamps was renovated in 1913 and hosts each year several special exhibitions by 20th-century artists who were highly influential to the history of international art (Dali, Chagall, Bernard Buffet...) and important to world cultures (Africa, China, Oceania). The vast medieval vaults present local archaeological findings as well as an interesting series of Greek vases dating back to the 4th and 5th century BC's.
