Located in the heart of Alsace, Molsheim has been a possession of the bishops of Strasbourg since the end of Antiquity. The city experienced its moment of glory after the Reformation, with the arrival of various religious orders, including the Jesuits (1580-1765) and the Carthusians (1598-1792).
Classified as a "Historical Monument" since 1998, the former Chartreuse now houses a Museum of Archaeology, Art and History. The collections evoke the history of the Bruche valley, from the Palaeolithic period to the present day.
The same premises house the Bugatti Foundation, which perpetuates, through the presentation of cars, unusual objects and numerous documents, the memory of the brilliant manufacturer Ettore Bugatti (1881-1947), creator of the factory installed on the outskirts of the city since 1909.
The itinerary continues outside with a visit to the monastery buildings, including four cells of the Carthusian monastery which have been restored to their original furniture, and the large cloister which is currently being restored under the direction of the "Bénévoles du Chantier de la Chartreuse".
