A history museum unique in Europe
Opened in 2014, the museum is the only one dedicated entirely to the history of the War of 1870 and the annexation of Alsace and part of Lorraine to the German Empire (1871-1918). It takes a new approach to the issues raised by this conflict: German unity, life during the annexation, tensions as the First World War approaches...
Exceptional Franco-German collections
The permanent exhibition of 900 m² presents French and German collections of particular rarity. Military objects are mixed with remarkable paintings, sculptures, monument elements and objects of everyday life.
Innovative architecture and museography
In a setting of astonishing modernity, the museum itinerary is both aesthetic and educational. The visitor becomes aware of history through the history of men traced by their personal belongings, photographs and testimonies. During their visit, the public is accompanied by many audiovisuals.
On the battlefield sites
The museum is located on the site of the August 1870 fighting, in front of the most important memorial of the War of 1870: the Hall of Remembrance. Visitors can extend their tour by discovering other monuments in the area and paths that evoke the conflict.
