Villa Steinbach, a beautiful residence from the 18th century, houses the Fine Arts Museum of Mulhouse. The collection is displayed on the first floor, while special exhibitions of modern art are presented on the second floor.
The collections comprise works from the 15th century up to the present day and include paintings by Brueghel, Bouguereau, Boudin, Jongkind, Courbet … Artists from Alsace are also well represented: Henner, Giess, Lehmann, Zuber … Thus the museum presents an overview of European art history.
The Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1864 by the Société Industrielle in Mulhouse and, thanks to the generosity of numerous private donors, has since been enlarged. In 1958 it became a municipal museum and since then it has also housed a pedagogical department.
