In a historic villa in the centre of Baden-Baden, the Schellhammer Museum presents African tribal art and, based on this, modern African exhibits: tradition and the transition to modernity.

In 1964, Günter Schellhammer joined the German-Congolese printing company Concordia in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, as technical director. In addition to his professional activities, he obtained a pilot's licence and was thus able to discover the various provinces of the country. As an outgoing, sociable person, he became friends with the chief of the Bayaka, Kasongo Lunda. He later made him an honorary chief. Fascinated by the culture of the various tribes, he began to collect masks and fetishes, as well as everyday artefacts from the Congo people.

His collection of historical artefacts was rounded off with works of art by young graduates of the art academy in Kinshasa.

In 1970, Günter Schellhammer travelled to Madagascar, where he met his wife. His passion for collecting was also passed on to his wife, with whom he travelled to numerous countries. In upcoming special exhibitions, exhibits from other travelled countries will be presented thematically.
