28. Martinů Festtage 2024

Festival

For 28 years, the Martinů Festival has captivated audiences with its special programs and outstanding artists. The festival centered around the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů, who spent his last years in Switzerland, is described by the press as "the finest of its kind."

Chamber music I

At this year's Martinů Festival, star oboist Albrecht Mayer will be exploring the works of Bohuslav Bohuslav Martinů in depth for the first time - a scandal, really, so late in the day, as the Czech composer wrote perhaps the most famous oboe concerto of the 20th century! Now it is soon to be on the repertoire list of the renowned solo oboist of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Albrecht Mayer's first steps in this direction will initially be through Martinů's oboe quartets.
Together with his Swiss musician friends, he will present a chamber music programme with virtuoso, captivating major works from the oboe literature of his French contemporary and "chansonnier" Francis Poulenc. In addition, Albrecht Mayer will present another work by Miloslav Kabeláč, which our audience celebrated almost frenetically in 2022, in order to help this composer out of the great shadow of his Czech compatriot Martinů and to draw attention to the new Kabeláč CD series.

Chansons

The young, sensitive chansonnier and seductive Vladimir Korneev, who had to cancel last year's Martinů Festtage due to illness, has a magnificent baritone. According to the Tagesspiegel, however, he is "more than just a singer". With the help of his great talent as an actor and charismatic narrator, his evenings go far beyond a concert experience. The "refugee child" of Georgian origin sings songs by Kurt Weill and Bohuslav Martinů perfectly in several languages. These include "Drei Lieder für das Cabaret die rote Sieben" and, of all things, "Zwei Lieder auf russische Poesie".

Football

zvgBohuslav Martinů's passion for football has barely been explored. In any case, the Czech composer wrote unique musical football history in Paris with "Half-Time" and found his own original, unmistakable "language" with this work, which marks the 100th anniversary of this gripping composition, probably written on the occasion of the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, fitting for this Olympic year Paris 2024 and above all for the European Championships.

Chamber Music II

Alena Baeva and Vadym Kholodenko, the dream couple of music history among the greatest performers, zvgfulfil a long-cherished and greatest wish of the artistic director of the Martinů Festival with the performance of these two, who are both at the top of his personal ranking list. Like Albrecht Mayer, the violinist from Kyrgyzstan and the Ukrainian pianist are performing with Bohuslav Martinů for the first time. A varied programme between solo and duo with Romantic composers who are exotic in this country, such as the composer Josef Suk - Martinů's teacher, whose 150th birthday it is - or the former Polish Prime Minister Ignacy Paderewski.
