"From clay to pottery in the typical Betschdorf blue and grey..."
As part of our annual events, theme 2025 "The Rhine Graben: natural underground resources in Northern Alsace...".

Another important material in petroleum geology is clay. The museum's mediator, Pascale Roll-Schneider, will first talk about this particular link. A second stop will take us to the village of Betschdorf, a few kilometers away, well known for its salt stoneware pottery. Head for the Fortuné Schmitter pottery, where Luce Schmitter will tell you all about the origins and development of this original craft. In this pottery workshop, which has been in existence since 1844, i.e. for 7 generations, you'll soon realize that although traditional products were first and foremost utilitarian objects, the artistic dimension is often present, sometimes with astonishing symbolism.
At the end of your visit, if you feel like it, you can take home a souvenir from the store, or visit the nearby Pottery Museum!

Speakers : Pascale ROLL-SCHNEIDER, museum cultural mediator and Luce SCHMITTER (Poterie Fortuné Schmitter)
