"Discovering former geological resource sites: oil, asphaltic limestone, clay and iron ore".
As part of the annual program, the theme for 2025 is "The Rhine Graben: natural underground resources in Northern Alsace...".
On this outing, François Pilgram will take us on a tour of former local mining sites. Starting at the museum, where a partial visit will explain the birth of petroleum, the guide will take you to the Clemenceau mine workings to learn more about the exploitation of this material by mining galleries (oil-bearing sand, visible marl, pumping of liquids, etc.). The tour continues with a clay outcrop once used by the Hérold family brickworks in Merkwiller. Then it's on to the nearby village of Lobsann, where the asphalt limestone of the concession can be evoked. The tour ends in the heart of the Lampertsloch forest, where iron was extracted from the ore in the "iron belt" of the Vosges Hochwald massif (16th c. - 19th c.).
A discovery outing where you can get up close and personal with rocks and materials, thanks to the various samples taken on site!
