Of all writing systems, Japanese is one of the most complex. It incorporates no less than four distinctive scripts. Originally designed for vertical use, Japanese characters are increasingly used horizontally. This new parameter changes the already complex formal and structural interactions between kanji, hiragana, katakana and Latin. The post-war period, with Japan opening up to the West and technical inventions, gave rise to a number of innovative typefaces and concepts. André Baldinger's BLine Japanese-Latin project, which involves the creation of a new typeface set for horizontal, bilingual composition, aims to question the principles and aesthetics of the Japanese formal repertoire.
