Themed tour
Before the beginning of the Roman conquest, the land on the right bank of the Rhine was considered an "area of doubtful ownership". With the arrival of Roman culture, various civilizational achievements made their way here - from trade and transport to bathing culture and an organized administrative structure. Eventually, however, many factors led to the abandonment of Roman settlement, including the exploitation of natural resources and environmental degradation, economic as well as domestic and foreign policy problems.

The change from prosperity to stagnation and eventual decline can also be traced in many of the settlement phases.
Ultimately, the abandonment of the Limes and thus the areas on the right bank of the Rhine led to a cultural break at the transition from Roman to early Germanic times: the new arrivals from the Elbe-Germanic region differed significantly from their predecessors in cultural terms, for example in their way of life, technology and architecture.
