As was the case for Alsatian society as a whole, the period 1939 to 1945 was a dark time for the Humanist Library, marked by threats to Selestad's written heritage. This heritage institution had to face up to an ideological context in which a vast undertaking to Nazify minds was underway.
This exhibition explores the issues surrounding the preservation of the Humanist Library's heritage from 1938 to the Liberation. It also exposes the ways in which Selestadians' reading and the written heritage inherited from the Renaissance were instrumentalized to celebrate the literary glories of the eternal Germany promoted by Nazism.
