On 20th September 2023, 139 Belgian and French burial and memorial sites of World War I were inscribed on the World Heritage List. Amongst those sites, 9 can be found in the Haut-Rhin, 1 in the Bas-Rhin, 3 in the Vosges and 7 in Moselle.
This exposition strives to allow visitors to discover a variety of topics in connect with how memorial and burial concerns were handled following the end of the Great War, specifically in the regions of the Vosges and Alsace-Moselle. Indeed, these regions present a number of unique characteristics, with an array of burial sites that were erected during the conflict by both German (Têtes des Faux, Lagarde, Petit Donon) and French (Hartmannswillerkopf, Linge, Fontenelle) soldiers but also cemeteries located behind the front for military personnel (Mossch, Saint-Dié-des-Vosges) and prisoners-of-war (Sarrebourg, Soultzmatt).
