The Basel Museum of Prints and Drawings preserves around 300,000 works from seven centuries. Thanks to donations and acquisitions, the collection is constantly growing. The Kunstmuseum Basel is now showing around 200 contemporary drawings, most of which have been added in the last ten years. They are by Michael Armitage, Martin Assig, Silvia Bächli, Miriam Cahn, Róza El-Hassan, Pélagie Gbaguidi, Leiko Ikemura, Renée Levi and Maja Rieder.
The drawings are abstract or figurative, deliberate or spontaneous. They deal with themes such as individual and collective identity in the field of tension between cultures and religions. Or, with broad strokes and color, they ignore the boundary to painting.
The exhibition Drawing Today provides an insight into the Kupferstichkabinett's collection strategy by means of an exemplary selection of works: a central aim is to form larger groups of works so that a deep understanding of an artistic position can be developed.
