This exhibition presents for the first time the unique role played by Alsace, and Strasbourg in particular, in the production of illustrated works for children from the 19th century onwards. From that time onwards, illustrators, publishers and printers from the region, or with strong ties to it, took part in a major publishing adventure to bring to life a new market designed to edify and entertain young readers. The region, between France and Germany, was able to draw on the dynamism and visionary talent of artists such as Gustave Doré, Théophile Schuler and publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel, who combined their efforts to bring stories to life for young readers.
