Hermann Daur (1870-1925) developed his own characteristic style based on his studies at the Grand Ducal Art School in Karlsruhe. His study trips to the vast landscape of northern Germany contributed to this, as did his stay at the Neu-Dachau painting school under Adolf Hölzel, whose teachings were associated with a harmonisation of natural colours and a simplification of natural forms. As a result, Daur increasingly rendered his motifs in a generous painting style that dispensed with details - pictorial concepts based on Symbolism and Art Nouveau emerged.
In addition, there are a number of landscapes within his oeuvre that appear extraordinarily modern in their reduction - especially when Daur uses impasto-like brushstrokes to make the geological recede in favour of pictorial space developed purely from colour. In this respect, his relatively short period of artistic creation spans an impressive arc, which is visualised in the exhibition and emphasises the topicality of his paintings.
After his early death in 1925, the Lörrach Museum of Local History was able to acquire his artistic estate with support from the entire region.
