The origins of the collection date back to the early 19th century, when the reigning Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen began to amass a collection of archaeological antiquities, mainly those found in his domain. The collection was continuously expanded until the 1910s, when the focus of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family's collecting activities shifted to other areas following the death of Prince Leopold in 1905.
The Hohenzollern collection of antiquities in Sigmaringen is a vivid monument to the beginnings of prehistoric and early history research in southern Germany. Its numerous finds are of great importance for regional history and prehistoric science, which is also recognized by its entry as a movable cultural monument.
