This summer, the Romanian artist Stefan Bertalan (1930-2014) will have his first comprehensive retrospective in Germany. Bertalan was interested in the world of the stars, the changing seasons, insects and, above all, plants, whose cycles he observed and documented in great detail.
His intensive search for patterns and systems to be found in organic, plant and mineral forms ultimately led to the development of a unique, all-encompassing cosmology, which also incorporates aspects of mathematics, cybernetics, bionics, psychology and architecture.
Bertalan worked primarily with drawing and painting, but also continued his studies in the fields of experimental photography, installation and performance. His radically interdisciplinary approach and his ongoing commitment to nature as a harmonious coexistence of organisms is highly topical and influential for contemporary discourses.
