Born in Zagreb, Vlado Kristl (19232004) is one of the most important and radical representatives of German auteur film. For the first time, the Badischer Kunstverein is taking a look at the entire oeuvre of the painter, draughtsman, poet, filmmaker and performance artist.
The spectrum of Kristl's films, which remain influential to this day, will be shown in a large cinema in the main hall: from the early animated films shot in what was then Yugoslavia to key works of independent cinema from the 1960s and anarchist feature films from post-war cinema to the manifestos of a late work that advocates improvisation and freedom and opposes oppression.
The highlight of the exhibition is the collection of drawings and studies, scripts, Kristl's publications and an extensive selection of archival materials and documents from his personal estate that accompany the films and have rarely been shown before.
