Douaumont Fort is the largest structure in the fortress of Verdun. Taken by surprise 4 days after the beginning of the battle of Verdun, it was occupied for 8 months by the German army, which used it as a shelter for its troops and as an essential support point to pursue its offensive. Despite several attempts to reconquer it, it was not until October 24, 1916 that this emblematic place of the battle was taken back.
