Art
The Museum Purrmann-Haus in Speyer presents the largest public collection of works by the classical modernist artist couple Hans Purrmann (1880-1966) and Mathilde Vollmoeller-Purrmann (1876-1943). Around 100 colourful paintings, watercolours and prints tell the fascinating story of two outstanding personalities of the European avant-garde. Hans Purrmann was a pupil of Franz von Stuck and a member of the ‘Berlin Secession’. In Paris, he was one of the founding members of the ‘Académie Matisse’. He had a lifelong friendship with Henri Matisse. Mathilde Vollmoeller-Purrmann reaped her first successes in Berlin as a pupil of Sabine Lepsius and Leo von König. She experienced the zenith of her career in Paris in numerous exhibitions and as a pupil of Henri Matisse. As a successful artist and fascinating female figure, she is regarded as a pioneer of emancipation at the beginning of the 20th century. Exciting special exhibitions present further facets of modern art. Numerous events and an intergenerational educational programme make the museum a lively place for cultural exchange.
