Still alive
Man Ray's (1890-1976) fury for life and creativity brought a breath of modernity to Paris between the wars. Like many Americans such as Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Gershwin, Henry Miller and Josephine Baker, Man Ray was drawn to France and its capital. In 1921, he joined Marcel Duchamp in Paris, having met him in New York in a circle open to the avant-garde and the Dada adventure. He took an active part in the cultural and poetic effervescence, while joining the Surrealists whose centenary we celebrate this year. His Violon d'Ingres, his Noire et Blanche, his Larmes de verre, his Elevage de poussières, his rayographies or his solarization processes with their mysterious, intense presence have become iconic. A must-see!
