80 years ago, from 1942 to 1944, the Légion des Volontaires Français contre le Bolchevisme (LVF) was sent to Belarus to take part iǹ the fight against Soviet partisans. For over two years, several thousand Frenchmen wearing German uniforms were stationed in villages. Under the authoritý of the Wehrmacht, they tried to contain the advance of the maquis, who were preparing for the arrival of the Red Army and the liberation of the country. Yet along the Berezina River, in the Borissov region we visited, the French LVF committed terrible massacres against the population.
With the help of a never-before-seen amateur film and diary, as well as on-site visits and interviews with the survivors of these massacres, we aim to shed light on a forgotten episode of the Second World War, which further obscures the role of French collaborators in this conflict.
